Emma Pollock – New Spotify Playlists

In advance of her new album ‘In Search of Harperfield’ (which is due out on January 29th), Emma’s pulled together two great playlists on Spotify: one full of her own material spanning The Delgados, her solo career and various collaborations; the other, choc-full of artists who have had a formative influence on her songwriting past and present.

Emma Pollock ‘In Search Of Harperfield’

A mere five and a half years after the angular splendidness of her Chemikal solo debut ‘The Law of Large Numbers‘, Emma’s finally delivered, not only its follow-up, but an album that’s up there with the very best in our catalogue.  Clocking in at just under 45 minutes, the eleven tracks making up ‘In Search of Harperfield‘ showcase Emma’s songwriting at its richly lyrical best.

From the string-drenched grandeur of ‘Intermission’ and ‘Dark Skies’, through the leftfield pop of ‘Parks and Recreation’ and ‘Vacant Stare’ to the complex, dark flamboyance of ‘Old Ghosts’ and ‘Monster In The Pack’ (replete with RM Hubbert cameo) ‘In Search of Harperfield’ effortlessly scales the peaks of her tenure with The Delgados while recalling the eccentric flair of Kate Bush, the intricate melodicism of Sandy Denny and, in Old Ghosts, the wistful melancholy of Dusty Springfield.  Yes, it’s that good.

And it’s not just us that think so…

The Great Eastern – Vinyl Reissue

Out of print for more or less fifteen years, we’ve finally welcomed The Delgados’ landmark third album back into the vinyl fold.  Opting for the quality + economy approach we decided to bodyswerve the lavish (and expensive) multi-vinyl deluxe reissue and went straight for a 180gsm vinyl, singlefold sleeve with 320kbps MP3 download code.

Nominated for a Mercury Prize back in 2000 alongside the likes of Coldplay’s ‘Parachutes’, Death In Vegas’ ‘The Contino Sessions’, Doves ‘Lost Souls’ and – the eventual winner – Badlly Drawn Boy’s ‘The Hour of Bewilderbeast’, ‘The Great Eastern’ was an unassuming, untucked shirt of an epic.

With ‘American Trilogy’, ‘No Danger’ and ‘Thirteen Gliding Principles’ all on here, high volume and headphones should prove to be just the ticket.  Its rather unhinged opener ‘The Past That Suits You Best‘, complete with Dave Fridmann dropped bar-bells, Tony Doogan soundbites and a ludicrously OTT ending pretty much sums up the whole crackpot venture – enjoy!

DILF_77 Would Like To Chat

Bill & Aidan follow up their acclaimed second album ‘The Most Important Place In The World’ with this surprise EP of brand new material.  Released on Oct 16th, ‘DILF_77 Would Like to Chat‘ is available as CD or 4 track download with the physical format including a bonus fifth track entitled ‘Oh, To Sing A Happy Song!’ and an extended version of the EP’s title track.

According to Aidan the EP’s titular opener is “an honest disco tribute and includes several references to classic hits.  The other tracks on the EP were considered too unique and self-contained to be on the album; and mostly too cheery!”.

Now a release in its own right, the EP’s available on the Chemikal shop.

FOUND ‘Cloning’ – Nov 6th

It’s been a long time coming but we’re delighted to announce that FOUND have delivered their follow-up to 2011’s ‘factorycraft’ with ‘Cloning’ scheduled for release on November 6th.  Never ones to rush the creative process, the ridiculously inventive BAFTA-winning robot-makers, sound installation artists and 7” ‘vinyl’ chocolatiers are now an analogue synth-drenched duo comprising Ziggy Campbell and Kev Sim.

Largely forgoing the edgy guitars of its predecessor for a John Carpenter, Tangerine Dream and Tristram Cary-inspired miasma of apocalyptic synth, ‘Cloning’ is a brilliantly cinematic reminder of why we loved FOUND so much in the first place.  You can read the full press release here.

‘Cloning’ is available to pre-order from the Chemikal shop HERE and comes in CD and a very limited (300 copies) run of heavyweight vinyl that includes a 320kbps MP3 download code.  The album can be streamed/downloaded from November.

Miaoux Miaoux announces new album

Almost three years since the debut long player by Miaoux Miaoux, Chemikal Underground is proud to announce the release of its exceptional follow-up, School Of Velocity. The album picks up the baton from the high-gloss, hook-laden electronic pop of Light Of The North and, as the title suggests, sprints through time and hyperspace at a pace that is little short of breathtaking.

On the album’s 10 songs, Glasgow-based multi-instrumentalist, producer and singer Julian Corrie is at the peak of his enviable powers, corralling influences ranging from eighties pop, nineties trance and the subtle, assured melodicism of Caribou to forge a sound with few parallels. This is forward-thinking pop in its purest form: a rush, a hit, a kiss.

School Of Velocity is released on the 1st of June and available to buy on CD, LP and digital download. The LP is on heavy vinyl, limited to 300 copies and includes a download code. Pre-order the album here

Bill Wells & Aidan Moffat Announce New Album…

“It’s a song for the city and the secrets she hides; it’s ticking clocks and dirty dishes; it’s raising the devil on old equipment. It’s about the life we want versus the life we need – and deciding which is which.” AIDAN MOFFAT

The long-awaited follow up to Bill & Aidan’s SAY Award-winning debut ‘Everything’s Getting Older‘ has been scheduled for a March 16th release. Entitled The Most Important Place In The World, this twelve-track collection looks set to be another pathos-drenched triumph. You can read the full press release here.

Available to pre-order from the Chemikal Shop HERE, ‘The Most Important Place In The World’ is available as a CD, Download (including 48-bit master WAVs) and a special double LP with 4 exclusive tracks, 12 page booklet, download code and a, erm…hymn sheet. You get the idea.

The Phantom Band ‘Fears Trending’

Released  – 26th January 2015

If you’ve followed The Phantom Band throughout their career to-date then you’ll know two things of the Glaswegian six-piece: feast often follows famine, and you should never accept them merely at face value.

Just as two wildly singular, diverse albums in ‘Checkmate Savage’ and ‘The Wants’ sprung up one after another between 2009 and 2010, before a period of quiet (solo projects notwithstanding), so the group’s more direct third record, ‘Strange Friend’, – more art-rock than rock-art – comes followed by seven tracks cut largely from the same recording sessions at Chem19, in the form of ‘Fears Trending’.

Have a listen to the opening track, ‘Tender Castle’.
